What we do

Macheo helps the most vulnerable children and their families in the urban slums and rural areas around Thika, Kenya. Every child is different. That is why we tailor our support to each child’s specific needs, helping them build a strong foundation for the future.

Our approach

Tailored intervention sets for vulnerable children

Macheo supports vulnerable children and their families with a carefully tailored combination of cost-effective interventions, based on their individual needs and the underlying causes of their situation.

We take a holistic approach, addressing seven key areas: psychosocial well-being, health, education, nutrition, shelter, care, and protection. This means looking beyond the child to understand and address the challenges within the family and, where relevant, the wider community.

Where possible, we work closely with local communities and government agencies to ensure that our interventions are effective, sustainable, and responsive to local needs.

Focus on children with the highest vulnerability

We are confronted every day with the reality that many children around us have unmet needs. Yet our resources are limited and can never be sufficient to address all these needs. This makes it essential for us to focus our efforts where they can make the greatest difference.

To maximize our impact, Macheo prioritizes children facing the greatest vulnerabilities, with particular attention to children in their first 1,000 days of life and adolescent girls. This focus is guided by our theoretical framework, which provides the evidence and rationale for our approach and helps us direct our resources towards interventions with the greatest potential to improve children’s lives.

Data driven approach and impact measurement

At Macheo, we use data and evidence to maximize our impact for every child. Our field teams collect real-time, structured data on the needs, circumstances, and progress of children and families through mobile applications. This information helps us identify underlying needs and contributing factors, track interventions, measure outcomes, and understand what works.

We use these insights to continuously learn and adapt our programmes, target support where it can make the greatest difference, and allocate resources more effectively. By embedding data, evidence, and learning into our decision-making, we strengthen accountability, improve programme quality, and ensure that our interventions deliver meaningful and lasting results for children and families.
